Do you actually need a water softener in Las Vegas?
An honest answer using the water authority own guidance: softening is a preference, not a health requirement. Here is when it still pays for itself anyway.

You do not need one for your health. The Southern Nevada Water Authority states plainly that softening is not a necessity to protect your health. You may well want one anyway, because 17 grain water shortens the life of water heaters, fixtures and appliances, and that is an economic argument rather than a medical one.
Start with what the water authority actually says
This matters because it is the opposite of how softeners are usually sold. The Southern Nevada Water Authority states that removing the calcium and magnesium softens the water but is not a necessity to protect your health, and presents softening as a matter of preference for bathing, cleaning and laundry.
So if anyone tells you valley water is unsafe without treatment, they are contradicting the agency that supplies and tests it. Hold on to that when you read a quote.
The honest case for buying one
Valley water is 291 parts per million, 17 grains per gallon, by the water district figure. Scale forms wherever that water is heated or evaporates, and the cost shows up in equipment rather than in health.
A softener is worth considering when you are replacing appliances faster than you think you should be, when a water heater has already failed early and you would rather not repeat it, when you are about to install a tankless heater where scale is the main enemy, or when the cleaning and skin complaints genuinely bother you day to day.
It is also worth considering simply because you plan to stay. The purchase is front loaded and the benefit accrues over years, so the calculation looks very different for a five year stay than for a one year one.
The honest case against
There are four real arguments and any good installer should tell you all of them.
It adds sodium to your water. That is inherent to ion exchange, and it is why many households pair a whole home softener with reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking.
Softened water carries salt, which can harm houseplants watered with it.
It has running costs and maintenance. Salt, occasional service, and eventually resin at the end of its life.
It may not physically fit. A softener needs an accessible incoming line, a drain for the regeneration cycle and power. In some condos, townhomes and older attached property, at least one of the three is genuinely unavailable.
Do not buy the wrong product for your complaint
The second row of that table is where most wasted money in this market goes. Taste complaints get answered with softeners, and the customer is disappointed because softening does not change taste.

If you decide to go ahead
Get the sizing arithmetic shown to you rather than asserted. Capacity comes from the number of people, water used per person per day and grains per gallon, and at 17 grains a four person household needs a materially different unit from a two person one. Ask where it will physically go, and confirm the installer has looked at the incoming line, the drain and the power rather than assuming.
Ask about the bypass. Without one, every future service means shutting water off to the whole house.
Ask for the contractor licence number and check it against the Nevada State Contractors Board register. Plumbing in Nevada is licensed under classification C-1, Plumbing and Heating, and checking takes about a minute.

Is a water softener necessary in Las Vegas?

Will a softener save me money?

Are salt free water softeners any good?
They are not softeners. The water authority states that salt free systems condition water but do not soften it, and notes that researchers consider the labelling misleading. If your complaint is spotting and lather, a salt free unit will disappoint you.
Does softened water taste salty?
It should not taste salty, but ion exchange does add sodium. Many households fit reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for drinking and cooking water for that reason.
Can I install a softener in a condo?
Sometimes. It needs an accessible incoming line, a drain for regeneration and power, and in some attached housing one of those is missing. Association rules can also apply. It is worth having someone look before you buy equipment.
