What plumbing in North Las Vegas is actually like
North Las Vegas is an incorporated city and it issues its own permits through its own building and safety function. The practical consequence is sharper here than anywhere else in the valley, because the boundary with the City of Las Vegas runs through developed neighborhoods rather than open desert. Two houses on facing sides of the same street can belong to different permit authorities, and for a water heater replacement that decides which counter you stand at.
The housing profile splits cleanly in two. The older core around Cheyenne Heights and the streets off Las Vegas Boulevard North includes property from the mid century growth, where galvanised supply lines and original cast iron drain stacks are both realistic findings. Cast iron matters for a different reason than supply pipe does: it corrodes and scales internally and eventually fails along the bottom of the pipe, which is a camera inspection question rather than something you diagnose from a slow drain.
The northern developments are a different world. The Las Vegas Valley Water District publishes valley tap water at 291 parts per million, 17 grains per gallon, and categorises it as very hard. It is the reason fixtures and water heaters here do not last as long as the box promised.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority states that removing calcium and magnesium softens water but is not a necessity to protect your health. Any company telling you otherwise is contradicting the agency that tests your supply.
