Is Las Vegas water hard? Yes, and here is the number

Las Vegas tap water is 291 ppm, 17 grains per gallon, classed very hard by the water district. What that means for your pipes, fixtures, laundry and skin.

The short answer

Yes. The Las Vegas Valley Water District publishes valley tap water at 291 parts per million, which is 17 grains per gallon, and classifies it as very hard. The minerals are calcium and magnesium, they arrive with Colorado River water through Lake Mead, and both water agencies state they are not a health risk.

The actual numbers, from the agencies that publish them

Two Southern Nevada agencies publish hardness figures and they differ slightly, because they describe slightly different service areas. Both are reported here rather than averaged into a number neither of them published.

The Las Vegas Valley Water District publishes valley tap water at 291 parts per million, or 17 grains per gallon, and categorises it as very hard. The Southern Nevada Water Authority publishes the regional figure as 280 parts per million, or 16 grains per gallon.

For context on what those numbers mean, water is generally described as hard above about 7 grains per gallon and very hard above about 10.5. At 16 to 17 grains, Las Vegas is not near a threshold. It is comfortably inside the hardest band in common use.

Where the hardness comes from

It is inherited rather than local. The two minerals responsible are calcium and magnesium, and the water district describes them as carried into Lake Mead from the mineral dense Colorado River.

Lake Mead supplies roughly 90 percent of Southern Nevada drinking water, with groundwater supplying roughly 10 percent. So valley hardness is a property of the river, not a fault in your plumbing, your neighborhood or your utility. No repair at the meter changes it. The only decision available is whether to treat the water after it enters the house.

Is it safe to drink

On the published record, yes. Both agencies state that the minerals causing hardness are not a health risk. The Southern Nevada Water Authority goes further and says removing calcium and magnesium softens water but is not a necessity to protect your health.

That is worth holding on to, because a great deal of water treatment selling in this market implies otherwise. Hardness in Las Vegas is a nuisance and an appliance cost. It is not a safety problem.

What 17 grain water actually does to a house

None of the above is dangerous. All of it is expensive over a decade, mostly through appliances and fixtures reaching the end of their lives earlier than the packaging suggested.

Observable effects of very hard water in a Las Vegas home
Where you see itWhat is happening
Shower heads and aeratorsCalcium deposits narrow the openings, so flow drops at one fixture while the rest of the house is fine. Often fixed by cleaning the aerator.
Glass shower doors and glasswareMineral film left as water evaporates. This is the complaint that most often prompts a softener purchase.
Soap and shampooHardness minerals react with soap, so it will not lather and leaves a film on skin and hair.
Water heatersScale and sediment collect on the bottom of the tank. That is the rumbling or popping you hear, and it is why valley heaters lose capacity and fail earlier.
Faucet and valve cartridgesDeposits build inside the moving parts, so handles stiffen and seals stop sealing sooner than elsewhere.
ToiletsScale narrows the rim jets that direct water into the bowl, which weakens the flush over years.
LaundryFabric feels stiffer and colours look duller, because minerals stay in the fibres.
Tankless water heatersScale forms on the heat exchanger, which is why descaling in this valley is maintenance rather than an optional service.

What you can do about it, in order of cost

Nothing, and simply accept faster fixture wear. This is a legitimate choice and plenty of valley households make it.

Clean aerators and shower heads periodically. Free, and it fixes a surprising share of low flow complaints.

Maintain the water heater per your unit manual, because sediment management is the single highest value maintenance task in hard water.

Filter for taste. If the actual complaint is that the water tastes like a pool, that is chlorine and carbon filtration handles it cheaply. Filtration does not affect hardness.

Install an ion exchange softener. This is the only common household method that genuinely removes calcium and magnesium. Reverse osmosis also removes them, and is usually fitted at one tap rather than whole house.

Be careful with anything sold as salt free. The water authority states that salt free systems condition water but do not soften it, and that researchers consider the labelling misleading.

What to have ready

None of it is required. All of it makes the call shorter.

  • Where you areThe address, and a cross street if the address is new or hard to find. Which end of the valley you are on decides who is closest.
  • What is happening, in your own wordsNo plumbing vocabulary needed. "Water under the sink since this morning" is a better description than a guess at the cause.
  • Whether water is running right nowThis is the question that changes everything else. If it is, say so first and we will talk you to the shutoff before anything else.
  • What you have already triedPlunged it, reset the disposal, flipped the breaker, ran the softener through a regeneration. It saves repeating the steps that did not work.
  • Whether you own or rentA landlord or an HOA sometimes has to authorise the work, and it is better to find that out on the phone than at the door.

Questions about this

How many grains per gallon is Las Vegas water?

17 grains per gallon, or 291 parts per million, according to the Las Vegas Valley Water District, which classes it very hard. The Southern Nevada Water Authority publishes 16 grains per gallon, or 280 parts per million, for the region.

Is Las Vegas water the hardest in the country?

It is in the hardest band in common use, but the honest answer is that we are not going to rank it nationally from a figure we can verify only locally. What is verifiable is that 16 to 17 grains per gallon is well inside the very hard category rather than near its boundary.

Does boiling water remove hardness?

Boiling can precipitate some hardness out of solution, which is exactly why kettles scale up. It is not a practical treatment method for a household, and it does nothing for the water reaching your shower, laundry or water heater.

Will a filter pitcher soften my water?

No. Standard carbon pitchers improve taste and smell. Reverse osmosis is the only filter type that removes calcium and magnesium, and that is a plumbed system rather than a pitcher.

Does hard water damage skin or hair?

It is not a health risk according to both water agencies. What people report is the practical effect: soap does not rinse cleanly, so skin feels filmy or dry and hair feels heavy. That is the complaint softening addresses most directly.
