The short answer

Most softener failures we are called out to are maintenance that never happened. In 17 grain water the unit works harder than the manual assumed, and an annual look at the resin, the settings and the brine tank prevents the expensive version.

What maintenance actually prevents

A softener is one of the few things in a house that quietly stops doing its job while still looking like it is working. These are the failures that a yearly check catches early.

  • Salt bridging into a solid shelf, so the unit cycles without drawing brine
  • Injectors and screens silting up, which stops regeneration working
  • Regeneration settings drifting, or never having been right
  • Resin gradually losing capacity, so hardness creeps back before anyone notices
  • A drain line that has come loose or lost its air gap
  • Salt mush in the bottom of the brine tank that needs clearing out
The simplest thing you can do yourself

Once a month, look in the brine tank and push a broom handle through the salt. If it stops on a crust with an air gap underneath, break it up. That one habit prevents the most common reason a softener stops softening, and it costs nothing.

What a maintenance visit covers

This is a checklist, not a sales call. If everything is fine, the answer is that everything is fine.

How it works

How the service visit works

  1. Test first

Hardness at a tap before anything is touched, so there is a before reading to compare against.

    On arrival
  2. Work the checklist

Brine tank, salt, injector, valve, settings, resin, drain. In that order, because that is roughly the order things fail.

    On site
  3. Correct the small things

Bridges cleared, settings corrected, screens cleaned. Most visits end here and need no parts.

    Same visit
  4. Tell you what is coming

If the resin or the valve is heading toward the end of its life, you hear it now, with a rough horizon, so it is a planned spend and not an emergency.

    Before we leave

All makes and models, including units that came with the house. If yours is still under a manufacturer warranty, check whether that warranty requires servicing by their own network before booking us.

What it costs

What decides the price of water softener maintenance

No rate or range for this work is published anywhere on this site, because none has been confirmed for publication for this business. What follows is the honest version: what actually moves the number on a job like this, so you can read any quote and judge it.

What you get from the call

Describe what is happening and you will hear what it usually means, what the repair involves and what somebody needs to see before quoting it. That happens whether or not you book the work.

What moves the number on this job

  • Access. The same repair costs very different amounts behind a cabinet, inside a wall, under a slab or four feet down in a yard. Access is usually the largest single variable.
  • Repair or replace. A cartridge is a part. A failed tank, exhausted softener resin or brittle polybutylene is a replacement, and no amount of repair spend fixes those.
  • Parts, and whether they still exist. A common cartridge is cheap and on the van. A control head for a discontinued softener is neither.
  • Permit and inspection, where the work needs them. A water heater replacement, a repipe and sewer work are permitted and inspected in this valley. That is real time and real cost, and work done without it turns up later in a buyer inspection.
  • Diagnosis time. Finding a hidden leak is a separate skill from fixing it, and on a slab leak the locating is most of the job. Paying for it is cheaper than exploratory demolition.

What to ask whoever quotes you

  • Which of the five things above is driving this number.
  • Is this a repair or a replacement, and what made you choose.
  • Does the price include the permit and the inspection, where the work needs one.
  • What is your Nevada contractor licence number. Plumbing is classification C-1, Plumbing and Heating, and the Nevada State Contractors Board register lets you check any licence in about a minute. Ask us the same question.

Reasonable scepticism about service plans

Is annual servicing really necessary?

Necessary is a strong word. What is true is that valley water is at the hard end of the national range, and the failures we get called to are overwhelmingly maintenance ones: bridged salt, silted injectors, wrong settings. An annual look is the cheap way to avoid those. Skipping it is a real choice, not a disaster.

Can I do this myself?

A good part of it, yes. Keeping salt topped up with the right type, breaking up bridges and watching the salt level drop between months tells you most of what you need. What is harder at home is observing a full regeneration cycle and judging resin condition.

What salt should I be using?

Follow your unit manual, because this varies by equipment and we are not going to override the manufacturer documentation for your specific model. What we will say generally: the wrong salt for your unit is a common cause of mush and bridging, so it is worth checking the manual once rather than buying on price.

We have no reviews to show you yet, so here is verifiable fact instead

A new site with a wall of glowing testimonials should make you suspicious, and this one does not have them because no review corpus has been verified for this brand. Rather than fill the space with invented quotes, these are three things about your water and your county that you can check against the agency that published them.

Your water is 291 ppm, and that is not our opinion

The Las Vegas Valley Water District publishes valley tap water at 291 parts per million, 17 grains per gallon, and categorises it as very hard. It is the reason fixtures and water heaters here do not last as long as the box promised.

Read the water district page

Softening is a preference, not a health need

The Southern Nevada Water Authority states that removing calcium and magnesium softens water but is not a necessity to protect your health. Any company telling you otherwise is contradicting the agency that tests your supply.

Photography note

These are illustrations and diagrams, not photographs of our work. No job photography, before and after pair, van, uniform or team photograph appears anywhere on this site, because we do not have verified photographs of this company work yet and generating them would fabricate evidence about a real business. Real job photography is on the list to add.

Water softener maintenance questions

How often should a water softener be serviced?

Once a year is the common interval, with a monthly homeowner glance in the brine tank between visits. In very hard water the unit cycles more, and more cycles means more wear, which is the argument for not stretching the interval.

How do I know if my softener is still working?

Two signals you can read yourself. First, the salt level should drop over weeks: if it does not, the unit is probably not regenerating. Second, the old complaints coming back, spotting and poor lather, means hardness is getting through.

Do you maintain softeners of any brand?

Yes. All makes and models, including units already in the house when you bought it. We do not claim authorised or factory status with any manufacturer.

What is a salt bridge?

Salt that has set into a hard crust spanning the tank, with an air gap underneath. The unit tries to draw brine, finds only air, and regenerates with nothing. From the outside the tank looks full of salt, which is why it fools people for months.

Is maintenance worth it on an old unit?

If the resin still has life, yes. If the resin is finished, maintenance cannot bring softening back, and we would tell you that rather than book a service. Part of the visit is finding out which of those is true.
