Most water heater calls are one of four complaints: no hot water, not enough, noise or a leak. Three of those are usually repairable. Water coming from the tank body itself is the one that ends the conversation, because a tank cannot be patched.
The symptom tells us a lot before anyone is dispatched, so it is worth being specific when you call.
If there is water on the floor, work out whether it is coming from a fitting at the top, a valve on the side, or the bottom of the tank itself. A fitting or a valve is usually a repair. Water weeping from the tank body means the tank has failed and it needs replacing. Take a photo before you clean it up.

The order matters. Diagnosing the cheap causes first is how you avoid paying for a replacement you did not need.

Almost always sediment and scale on the bottom of the tank. Water gets trapped under the layer, boils and forces its way out, and that is the popping or rumbling you hear. In very hard water it builds faster. It is also a sign the tank is losing usable capacity.
Rather than repeat a national average that assumes softer water, the honest answer is that hard water shortens it and maintenance lengthens it. We date your unit from the serial number and tell you where it sits, which is more useful than a number from a brochure.
If water is actively running, yes: shut the cold inlet valve at the top of the heater or the main house shut off, then call. If it is a slow weep with no flooding, it is urgent rather than an emergency, but it does not get better on its own.
On an electric unit an element or a thermostat is a normal repair, and it is a lot cheaper than a tank. Whether it is the right call depends on the age of the unit, which is why the data plate gets read first.
