Sizing a water softener for 17 grain valley water
How softener capacity is actually calculated: people, gallons and grains. Worked at Las Vegas hardness, so you can check any quote before you sign it.

Softener capacity is people, times gallons per person per day, times grains per gallon. At the valley figure of 17 grains, a four person household generating around 240 gallons a day needs roughly 4,080 grains of removal per day, which is the number every quote should be built from.
The arithmetic, so you can check any quote
Sizing a softener is not mysterious and it is not proprietary. There are three inputs and one multiplication.
First, the number of people in the house. Second, water used per person per day, for which 60 to 80 gallons is the usual planning range. Third, hardness in grains per gallon, which for this valley is 17 by the Las Vegas Valley Water District figure.
Multiply them and you get daily grains of hardness the unit has to remove. For four people at 60 gallons each, that is 240 gallons a day times 17 grains, which is 4,080 grains per day.
A unit is then chosen so that it regenerates on a sensible schedule rather than constantly, with the manufacturer capacity rating and the efficiency of the regeneration setting deciding the rest. Why undersizing is the common mistake here
At 17 grains, a unit that would be comfortable in a softer market is working near its limit in this one. An undersized softener copes by regenerating more often, and that has three visible consequences: it uses noticeably more salt, it spends more time offline mid cycle, and its resin works harder so it wears sooner.
The owner usually notices the salt bill first and assumes softeners are simply expensive to run. Frequently the real problem is that the unit was specified for the house size rather than for the household and the hardness.
What else changes the specification
Peak flow, not just daily volume. A unit has to pass enough water at once for simultaneous showers and appliances without a pressure drop, which is a separate rating from capacity.
Iron or other specific constituents, where present, because they affect resin choice and service life.
Whether reverse osmosis is going in at the kitchen tap, which is a common pairing and affects nothing about softener sizing but does affect the overall plan.
Physical space, drain access and power at the intended location, which regularly constrain the choice more than the arithmetic does.

What daily grain load did you calculate for my household, and what hardness figure did you use. If the answer is not close to 17 grains per gallon, ask why.
How often will this unit regenerate on the setting you are proposing, and what does that mean for salt use.
Where exactly is it going, and have you confirmed the incoming line, the drain and the power at that spot. A quote produced without that check is provisional whether it says so or not.

Is a bigger softener always better?
No. Oversizing costs more up front and can mean the resin sits between regenerations longer than ideal. The aim is a unit matched to daily demand with a sensible regeneration interval, not the largest one available.
Does a water softener reduce water pressure?
A correctly sized and maintained unit should not noticeably. A unit that is undersized for peak flow, or one that is due for service, can restrict flow, which is a sizing and maintenance issue rather than an inherent property.
