The short answer

Running, rocking, weeping at the base or blocked. Some of those are an inexpensive part and twenty minutes. A toilet weeping at the base usually means the wax seal or the flange, and that one is worth doing properly.

What your toilet is doing

Each of these points at a different part, and the fixes vary a lot in cost.

  • Running constantly, or refilling by itself every few minutes
  • A weak flush that needs a second one
  • Water on the floor around the base, especially after a flush
  • A toilet that rocks or shifts when you sit on it
  • A tank that sweats heavily in summer
  • Blocked or slow to clear
  • A crack in the tank or bowl, which is the end of that fixture
The running toilet, and why it matters here

A toilet that runs continuously is usually a flapper or a fill valve, both inexpensive parts. It is also quietly the largest water waster in most homes. In a valley with the water constraints this one has, it is worth fixing the week you notice it rather than the month.

Symptom to cause

This is the diagnostic order, cheapest first.

Toilet symptoms and their common causes
SymptomUsual cause and fix
Runs constantlyFlapper or fill valve. Inexpensive parts, quick fix, immediate reduction in water use.
Weak or partial flushMineral build up in the rim jets and siphon, a poorly adjusted flapper chain, or a partial blockage. In hard water the rim jets are a real cause.
Water at the base after flushingWax seal or closet flange. Toilet has to be lifted, and the flange condition decides whether it is a seal or a repair.
Rocking or shiftingLoose bolts, an uneven floor, or a failing flange. A rocking toilet destroys its own seal, so it does not stay a small problem.
Sweating tankCondensation from cold fill water in warm air. Annoying rather than a fault, and there are mitigations.
Cracked tank or bowlNot repairable. Replacement, and until then the water should be shut off at the toilet valve.

How it works

How a toilet job runs

  1. Describe the symptom

Running, flushing poorly, leaking at the base or blocked. Each brings different parts.

    On the call
  2. Diagnose, including the flange

For any base leak, the flange gets inspected once the toilet is lifted. Replacing a seal onto a broken flange is the repair that fails again in a month.

    On site
  3. Repair or replace

Internal parts where that is the fault. Reset with a new seal where the leak is at the base. New fixture where the china is cracked or the fixture is not worth keeping.

    Same visit where parts allow
  4. Test properly

Multiple flushes, and the base checked dry afterwards. A base leak that only shows on the third flush is still a base leak.

    Same visit

If a toilet has been rocking for a while, expect the flange conversation. The rocking is what damaged it, and a reset onto a damaged flange will not hold.

What it costs

What decides the price of toilet repair and installation

No rate or range for this work is published anywhere on this site, because none has been confirmed for publication for this business. What follows is the honest version: what actually moves the number on a job like this, so you can read any quote and judge it.

What you get from the call

Describe what is happening and you will hear what it usually means, what the repair involves and what somebody needs to see before quoting it. That happens whether or not you book the work.

What moves the number on this job

  • Access. The same repair costs very different amounts behind a cabinet, inside a wall, under a slab or four feet down in a yard. Access is usually the largest single variable.
  • Repair or replace. A cartridge is a part. A failed tank, exhausted softener resin or brittle polybutylene is a replacement, and no amount of repair spend fixes those.
  • Parts, and whether they still exist. A common cartridge is cheap and on the van. A control head for a discontinued softener is neither.
  • Permit and inspection, where the work needs them. A water heater replacement, a repipe and sewer work are permitted and inspected in this valley. That is real time and real cost, and work done without it turns up later in a buyer inspection.
  • Diagnosis time. Finding a hidden leak is a separate skill from fixing it, and on a slab leak the locating is most of the job. Paying for it is cheaper than exploratory demolition.

What to ask whoever quotes you

  • Which of the five things above is driving this number.
  • Is this a repair or a replacement, and what made you choose.
  • Does the price include the permit and the inspection, where the work needs one.
  • What is your Nevada contractor licence number. Plumbing is classification C-1, Plumbing and Heating, and the Nevada State Contractors Board register lets you check any licence in about a minute. Ask us the same question.

Common questions

Is it worth repairing an old toilet?

Internal parts, yes, almost always. Where it tips toward replacement is a cracked fixture, a very old low efficiency model using far more water per flush than current ones, or a flange repair on a fixture you dislike anyway.

Why does my toilet flush weakly?

In this valley, frequently mineral build up blocking the rim jets, which are the small holes under the rim that direct water into the bowl. Scale narrows them and the flush loses its swirl. It can also be an adjustment or a partial blockage.

Can I install a toilet myself?

People do. The parts that go wrong are the seal seating and the flange condition, and a base leak into a subfloor is a costly mistake. If the flange looks damaged or the floor is uneven, it is worth a professional reset.

Checkable, not claimed

We have no reviews to show you yet, so here is verifiable fact instead

A new site with a wall of glowing testimonials should make you suspicious, and this one does not have them because no review corpus has been verified for this brand. Rather than fill the space with invented quotes, these are three things about your water and your county that you can check against the agency that published them.

Your water is 291 ppm, and that is not our opinion

The Las Vegas Valley Water District publishes valley tap water at 291 parts per million, 17 grains per gallon, and categorises it as very hard. It is the reason fixtures and water heaters here do not last as long as the box promised.

Read the water district page

Softening is a preference, not a health need

The Southern Nevada Water Authority states that removing calcium and magnesium softens water but is not a necessity to protect your health. Any company telling you otherwise is contradicting the agency that tests your supply.

Photography note

These are illustrations and diagrams, not photographs of our work. No job photography, before and after pair, van, uniform or team photograph appears anywhere on this site, because we do not have verified photographs of this company work yet and generating them would fabricate evidence about a real business. Toilet repair and installation questions

How do I stop a toilet from running?

The usual causes are a worn flapper that no longer seals or a fill valve that will not shut off, both inexpensive parts. Turn the valve behind the toilet to stop the water while you decide. It is worth fixing promptly, because a running toilet wastes water continuously.

Why is there water around the base of my toilet?

Most often a failed wax seal, sometimes a cracked or corroded closet flange, occasionally condensation or a supply connection. The toilet has to come up to tell the difference, and the flange gets checked while it is off.

How long does a toilet installation take?

A straightforward replacement is typically an hour or two. Flange repair, floor levelling or a rough in position that does not match the new fixture adds time.

Does hard water affect toilets?

Yes. Scale builds in the rim jets and the siphon, which weakens the flush over years, and it builds on flapper seats so they stop sealing. Both are common valley causes for complaints people assume are design faults.

My toilet rocks. Is that serious?

It is worth dealing with. Movement breaks the seal underneath, and then water gets into the subfloor without appearing on the surface. Tightening the bolts on a toilet that rocks because the flange has failed can crack the fixture, so it is worth looking properly.
